I painted five martinis on a Tuesday and I'd do it again.

I don't always know what I'm going to paint when I walk into the studio.

That's not a problem I'm trying to solve. It's the whole point.

This piece started because it was a Tuesday afternoon and I was thinking about a long lunch with good friends and the kind of conversation that makes you lose track of time. Four martinis in. Maybe five. The afternoon light doing that thing it does in late summer.

I didn't sketch it out. I didn't plan the composition. I just started with that green — that particular shade that is somehow both electric and calm at the same time — and let it go from there.

The best paintings I make are the ones I wasn't trying to make.

The martini glasses came quickly. Loose lines. Imperfect shapes. The kind of rendering that leaves room for you to bring something to it. I've had people tell me they see different things in this piece — someone said the glasses looked like they were having their own conversation. I love that.

That's what I'm going for, every time. Not a perfect representation. An impression. Something that catches you and then keeps giving you something new every time you look at it.

This one is available. 16" × 20" on canvas. The green is even better in person.

If this isn't quite what you're looking for but you love the energy of it, I also do commissions. Tell me the room. Tell me the feeling. I'll paint it for you.
